Political Journalists Stamp

Issued November 2002, the series of four stamps show the portraits of outstanding Jewish political journalists of the 19th/20th centuries whose work had an influence in the development toward the re-establishment of the State of Israel. All four journalists originated from Eastern Europe, Russia and the Baltic, as active Zionists and all but one emigrated to the Land before the Holocaust, and took part in its patriotic development promoting various aspects of political policies. The majority of 19th century Jewish and Hebrew newspapers in the Diaspora were mainly political journals with articles and commentary rather than news reports. In the strained, unstable political climate of 20th century Palestine, where each political movement or party had its own newspaper or periodical, hardline political journalism became the hallmark of the Jewish Press, often operating underground, striving for Jewish political and national identity.

Abba Ahimeir – Political journalist, historian and writer; Israel Eldad – Teacher, philosopher and political journalist;Moshe Beilinson – well-known political writer of the Jewish community in Palestine, and chief spokesman of the Labour Movement; Rabbi Binyamin – Hebrew political journalist who published a great number of articles and essays, often expressing individualistic viewpoints.
