Historic Sites, Sha’ar HarGay Stamp

The stamp issued in May 2001, features an attractive pastel drawing of the historic Sha’ar HaGay inn, located on the road from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv. The tab displays a close-up section of the metal-wrought staircase leading to the upper part of the building. During the War of Independence it was a station on the way to Beit Machsir, one of the most dangerous transport routes where Arab gangs were trying to cut off any connection with Jerusalem. Wreckages of armoured vehicles on the side of the road have been preserved to commemorate the historic tenacious struggle that was to “decide the destiny” of the Holy City. The Inn was one of the stations for travellers between Jaffa and Jerusalem, bult by the Turks at the end of the nineteenth century.
