Rabbi Joseph Hayyim Ben Elijah Stamp
This stamp was issued in April 1992, and features a portrait of the bearded, turbaned rabbi, who was leader of the Baghdad Jewish Community as also were his father and grandfather before him. From his youth, Rabbi Joseph Hayyim was a brilliant student of the Law and became extremely learned in the Torah and Kabbalah. As a preacher he held the attention of his audience. In his love for Palestine, the land of his fathers, he made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1896, where he printed most of his books. His book Ben Ish Hai on Jewish Law is the most famous of his works. Other well-known works are Ben Yehoyad’a (5 volumes), containing commentaries on the legends of the Babylonian Talmud and Rav Re’alim, which is a work of Jewish legal research. He was greatly esteemed by Jewish communities all over the world in the influence and widespread admiration he aquired.
