Rabbi Harrim Benatar Stamp
The attractive green and gold coloured stamp, issued in June 1992, shows the book cover of Or-Ha-Hayyim – “The Light of Life”, written on the Torah, and is the most famous work of Rabbi Benatar. The Rabbi was born in the town of Sale, in Morocco where Jews suffered severe persecution from a despotic ruler. From a young age he skilfully expounded the Torah, writing a commentary on a section of the Talmud. He later journeyed to Israel during which he suffered extreme hardships along the way, and in this time wrote his most famous books, one on the Talmud; the code of Jewish law; on the Torah and one the Prophets. When he finally reached Israel he went to Jerusalem and his authority was accepted by all Jewish scholars residing there, who recognized his ability and great learning. Though he died less than a year after his arrival, he became a legend amongst the Jews and was known by the title “The Holy”, or “Or Ha Hayyim” after his most famous work for which Jewry holds him to the highest esteem.
The stamp with an information sheet are enclosed in a plastic protection sheet.
